When people hear about what I do, they often question how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) can genuinely contribute to business success. As the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer (CDEIO) at Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems (HIES), I have seen firsthand the transformative power of the uniqueness of our employees in driving innovation, fostering an inclusive work environment, and ultimately contributing to the company’s bottom line. DEI plays a crucial role in our business strategy in the three key areas of innovation, authenticity, and performance.
Driving innovation
One of the most compelling arguments for for valuing the diversity of thoughts in the workplace is its ability to drive innovation. Diverse teams of qualified individuals bring a variety of strong perspectives, experiences, and ideas to the table, which can lead to more creative solutions and improved problem-solving. At HIES, we have witnessed when employees from different backgrounds and disciplines collaborate, they often challenge each other’s thinking and avoid the trappings of group think. This diversity of thought is essential for innovation, allowing us to stay ahead in a competitive market. By embracing DEI, we are not only fostering a culture of creativity but also ensuring our products meet the diverse needs of our global customer base.

Fostering authenticity and inclusion
A key aspect is creating an environment where employees feel they can be their authentic selves. When people feel valued and included, they are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and productive. At HIES, we strive to build a workplace culture where every individual feels respected and empowered to contribute their unique strengths.
Our commitment is reflected in our policies and practices that promote equity and inclusion. Initiatives such as unconscious bias trainings, cultural awareness sharing, allyship training as well as the implementation of employee-led regional DEI committees in North America, Japan, China, and Australia help create a supportive environment. The employees who serve on these committees are passionate about ensuring we are creating a culture that is inclusive to all our employees. When individuals are free to express their true selves without fear of discrimination or bias, they are more likely to bring their best ideas and efforts to their work.

Enhancing business performance
The benefits of the diversity of thoughts extend beyond innovation and employee engagement to include significant improvements in business performance. A diverse and inclusive workplace attracts talent and strengthens employee retention. The innovative ideas created by our teams directly impact our bottom line, and our diverse workforce helps position us for sustained competitive advantage.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just words at HIES; they are integral to our business strategy and brand. Our commitment ties substantially into Hitachi Group’s core values of Harmony, Sincerity, and Pioneering Spirit.
An inclusive environment drives innovation by bringing diverse perspectives to the table, allows employees to be their genuine selves, thereby enhancing business performance. As we continue to prioritize and invest our employees, we are building a stronger, more competitive and more resilient company. Our commitment is a testament to our belief that a diverse and inclusive workplace is essential for driving sustainable growth and achieving our business goals.
